Condo and renters insurance for what's yours
Your landlord's or HOA's policy stops at the walls. Your belongings, your liability and your living costs after a loss are on you, and protecting them usually costs little each month.

Know exactly what each coverage does
A condo or renters policy is a handful of protections in one. Some matter most to condo owners.
Personal property (Coverage C)
Furniture, electronics, clothing and kitchenware, at home or with you, from covered losses like fire, theft and many water events.
- Worth checking: most people underestimate what they own. A room-by-room tally usually lands much higher, and jewelry, art and firearms should be scheduled.
Personal liability (Coverage E)
Covers a guest's fall, an overflowing tub that damages the unit below, or a dog bite, at home or away.
- Worth checking: default limits ($100,000–$300,000) are thin if you have savings or income to protect. An umbrella adds $1 million or more.
Loss of use (Coverage D)
Pays for hotels, meals and extra living costs if a covered loss makes your home temporarily unlivable.
- Worth checking: time and dollar limits should be enough to house you, roommates and pets through a long repair.
Loss assessment (condo owners)
When the HOA's master policy falls short on a shared loss, the association can bill each owner a special assessment. This pays your share.
- Worth checking: default limits are often $1,000–$5,000. Confirm it covers your share of the master-policy deductible.
Walls-in building property (condo owners)
Your HO-6 covers the interior the master policy doesn't: flooring, cabinets, built-ins, fixtures and improvements.
- Worth checking: master policies range from bare walls to all-in. Set your dwelling limit high enough to rebuild your interior and upgrades.
