Pallet manufacturing insurance for the whole supply chain

Pallet production sits where woodworking, manufacturing and logistics meet: heavy equipment, combustible dust and products that travel the whole supply chain. As a broker, we compare options across specialty markets and shape a program around how your yard actually runs.

Why it matters

Real claim scenarios and what responds

Pick a scenario to see the cost and the coverage that steps in. Illustrative examples only; actual outcomes depend on your policy's terms, limits and the facts of each claim.

What happened

A pallet collapses under load

A pallet rated for 2,500 lbs fails under a 2,000 lb load at a customer warehouse, injuring a forklift operator and destroying $45,000 in electronics.

What respondsProducts liability covers claims from pallet failures that cause injury and property damage.

Coverage library

Coverage built for the risk

What each coverage does, and the gap it closes for a pallet manufacturer.

Liability

General Liability (incl. products)

Third-party bodily injury and property damage: premises, operations, products liability for pallet failures, completed operations, damage during delivery and legal defense. Product failures downstream trace right back to the manufacturer.

Liability

Umbrella / Excess

Limits of $1M to $10M+ above GL, auto and employers liability, including product-liability excess. Catastrophic claims quickly exceed primary limits.

Liability

Pollution Liability

Wood-treatment chemical releases, fuel and oil spills, dust-emission claims, cleanup costs and regulatory defense. Standard GL excludes pollution entirely.

Property & equipment

Commercial Property

Building and structures, manufacturing equipment, lumber and raw materials, work-in-progress and finished pallet inventory. Wood-dust fire exposure makes adequate limits essential.

Property & equipment

Equipment Breakdown

Mechanical and electrical failure of saws, planers, nailers, conveyors, dust-collection systems, compressors and air systems. Breakdown is excluded on most property forms.

Property & equipment

Business Interruption

Lost net income, continuing fixed expenses, extra expense to speed recovery, an extended restoration period and contingent BI. A fire can halt production for months.

Property & equipment

Inland Marine / Cargo

Finished pallets and lumber in transit, equipment being moved, customer property in your care, and loading and unloading. Property coverage usually stops at your dock.

People & vehicles

Workers' Compensation

Required in Washington. Medical care and lost wages for saw cuts, nail-gun accidents, forklift incidents, struck-by lumber or pallets and repetitive-motion injuries. Manufacturing sees above-average claim frequency and severity.

People & vehicles

Commercial Auto

Flatbed and delivery trucks, trailers, off-premises forklifts, at-fault accident liability, cargo in transit and hired and non-owned auto. Personal auto won't respond to commercial delivery use.

Specialty

Employment Practices (EPLI)

Employee claims of discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, wage and hour violations and retaliation across production and admin staff.

Fire and dust readiness

Controls carriers look for

Wood dust is highly combustible, and insurers price coverage on how you control it. Strong fire practices can meaningfully lower premiums, and sometimes make coverage available at all.

Dust collection system

Regular housekeeping

Sprinkler system

Dust-rated electrical

Hot-work controls

Fire extinguishers

Coverage gaps

Common gaps and the fix

The exposures we most often see under-covered on pallet-manufacturer policies.

Inadequate product-liability limits

Pallets circulate through the supply chain and can cause substantial damage when they fail. Minimum limits are low for the exposure.

The fix: carry at least $1M / $2M for products and completed operations, with an umbrella for catastrophic claims.

No equipment-breakdown coverage

Standard property excludes mechanical and electrical breakdown, so a failed saw or conveyor isn't covered for repair or lost production.

The fix: add equipment breakdown, and include business interruption for breakdown.

Underinsured property values

Lumber prices swing widely; coverage set on old valuations can leave you underinsured.

The fix: review property values annually against current replacement costs for building, equipment and inventory.

Inadequate business interruption

A fire or major failure can halt production for months, and many operations carry too little BI or too short a period.

The fix: size BI to real revenue and a realistic 6 to 12 month recovery, and add extra-expense coverage.

No cargo / transit coverage

Pallets and materials in transit are exposed to damage, theft and accidents that property policies don't cover.

The fix: add inland marine / cargo for finished pallets going out and lumber coming in.

Heat-treatment certification risk

ISPM-15 errors can cause rejected shipments, quarantine costs and customer claims.

The fix: make sure liability addresses heat-treatment services, keep rigorous documentation and consider E&O.

How we work

Brokers who know the mill floor

Manufacturing experience

We understand pallet production: the equipment, the processes and the coverage that protects it. Since 1992 we've worked with Pacific Northwest manufacturers.

Specialized markets

We compare carriers that write woodworking and manufacturing risks, so pricing and terms reflect your actual operation.

Coordinated programs and claims

Property, liability, workers' comp and auto structured together to avoid gaps, with support from first notice of a claim to resolution.
