Agribusiness insurance for the land, the herd and the harvest
Farms, ranches, vineyards and orchards face risks that standard commercial insurance was not built for. We put together programs that cover the land, the equipment, the livestock and the crop, and the livelihood behind them.

The coverages that fit a farm
What each coverage does, and the gap it closes for an agricultural operation.
Farm Property
Dwellings, outbuildings, barns, silos, machinery sheds, fencing, corrals, irrigation systems, and harvested crops and supplies. Standard property forms are not built for agricultural structures.
Farm Equipment
Tractors, combines, planters, tillers, seeders, harvesters, balers and irrigation equipment, on your land, in transit or in a distant field, with optional breakdown coverage. A single modern tractor can top $200,000.
Farm Liability
Bodily injury and property damage to others, products liability for crops and livestock sold, completed operations, personal and advertising injury, and defense costs, from visitor injuries to livestock escapes. One serious injury can generate claims over $1M.
Farm Product Liability
Claims from products you sell, such as produce at a farmers market, eggs from a farm stand or livestock sold for consumption: bodily injury, contamination, recall expenses and defense. Essential for direct-to-consumer sales.
Agritourism Liability
Visitor injuries from U-pick, corn mazes, hayrides, tours, educational programs, farm weddings and events. Standard farm liability may exclude visitor activities entirely.
Pollution Liability
Pesticide and herbicide drift, fertilizer contamination, fuel-storage spills and manure runoff claims, plus cleanup costs. Standard liability policies exclude pollution.
Farm Umbrella
$1M to $10M+ above farm liability, auto and employers liability, with additional defense costs and broader scope, for when a serious incident exhausts primary limits.
Livestock
Death from covered perils such as accident, disease, fire and lightning, plus theft and, for breeding stock, loss of use. Cattle, dairy cows, horses, sheep, goats, swine and poultry.
Crop Insurance
Federal (RMA) and private policies against weather, disease, pests and price swings: Yield Protection, Revenue Protection, Whole-Farm Revenue Protection, Prevented Planting, Pasture, Rangeland & Forage, and specialty-crop and margin options. Federal programs have strict enrollment deadlines; miss one and there is no coverage that year.
Workers' Compensation
Medical treatment, wage replacement and employer's liability for injuries from equipment, chemicals, animals, heat and physical labor, with seasonal-worker and family-member options. Often required above certain employee thresholds.
Farm Auto & Fleet
Farm trucks and pickups, livestock trailers, grain and produce hauling, equipment transport, and hired and non-owned auto. Personal auto will not respond to commercial farm use.
How your exposures shift through the year
Spring
Planting season: get equipment field-ready and lock in crop insurance before deadlines pass.
- Crop enrollment deadlines
- Equipment prep and scheduling
- Planting coverage
- Seasonal hiring starts
Summer
Peak growing season: irrigation, heat and a larger seasonal crew raise your exposures.
- Growing-season perils
- Irrigation equipment
- Seasonal-worker comp
- Wildfire and drought risk
Fall
Harvest and agritourism peak: stored crops and farm visitors both raise your risk.
- Harvest and crop storage
- Agritourism liability
- Equipment breakdown risk
- Higher property limits
Winter
Time for planning: shelter livestock, store equipment and review coverage before renewal.
- Livestock shelter
- Equipment storage
- Annual policy review
- Renewal planning
Real claim scenarios and what responds
Illustrative examples only. Actual outcomes depend on your policy's terms, limits and the facts of each claim.
Combine fire during harvest
A combine catches fire during wheat harvest, destroying the machine and the standing crop, and the fire spreads to a neighbor's field.
Illustrative example. Real outcomes depend on the facts and your policy terms.

Common coverage gaps, and the fix
The exposures we most often see under-covered on farm policies.
Undervalued equipment
Equipment values have risen, but many policies still reflect old numbers. Fix: review equipment schedules annually, include all implements, and consider agreed-value or replacement-cost coverage.
No pollution coverage
Standard farm liability excludes pollution, so drift, runoff and fuel spills can go uncovered. Fix: add pollution liability if you use chemicals or store fuel, especially near homes or waterways.
Agritourism exclusions
Many farm policies exclude visitor activities, so U-pick, tours and events may have no injury coverage. Fix: disclose all agritourism activities, add agritourism liability and use participant waivers.
Inadequate liability limits
A single serious injury can exceed $1M, putting personal assets and the farm at risk. Fix: carry at least $1M in farm liability plus a farm umbrella; the added cost is usually modest.
No crop insurance
Drought, flood or disease can turn a bad year into a very costly one. Fix: explore subsidized federal options; Whole-Farm Revenue Protection suits diversified operations.
No business interruption
When a fire or breakdown halts operations, you lose income during recovery. Fix: add loss-of-income coverage sized to your revenue and a realistic recovery time.
